Keep it going and mix it up, adjusting and playing with the amount and sequences of time (2 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 minute or 5 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute or any combination that works best for you). Compare your drawing to the original image, then do another contour drawing for 2 minutes-less time, so you should be working more quickly-and compare it to your 5 minute drawing. ![]() Notice how they all have different perspectives and approaches-it’s so interesting to see how others approached the task!ĭo the contour drawing for 5 minutes as outlined above. Walk around to look at everyone’s drawings. If you did your drawing with friends or family members, try placing your contour drawings face-up around the room. What do you think? What was easy? What was difficult? What route did your eyes take to draw this image? Look at your drawing and compare it to the image you based it on. Take 5 minutes or so to create your first contour drawing (put a timer on your phone if it's easier), and then pencils down. No peeking! Your hand will follow where your eyes go. Keep your focus on the artwork you’re inspired by, looking closely at the lines in the image. The two most important things to remember are: use one continuous line and no looking at your paper as you draw. ![]() Some famous artists who have used contour drawing include Alexander Calder, Egon Schiele, and many more.Īll you need is a pencil and some paper! Any size paper will do, but sometimes bigger is easier at first. It helps us to look closer at an image, and especially draws our attention to the lines within an image. You may wish to include onions, fruit, vegetables, flower arrangements, etc.Contour drawing uses one, continuous line to capture what you see. Create longer observation drawings from simple still-life arrangements. For a blind continuous line contour, have students do the same but without looking at the paper. For a continuous line contour drawing, direct students to fix their eyes on the contours of the onion and draw the contour very slowly with a steady, continuous line without lifting the drawing tool. Try both drawing exercises with students in five to ten minute increments then adding more time if desired. Explain that the pattern on the skin of the onion helps students see cross-contour lines, which help give a shape volume. Give students materials to practice contour-line drawings of onions. Both exercises are designed to improve students’ visual concentration. Sometimes this exercise is modified as a blind continuous line contour in which a continuous-line drawing is produced without ever looking at the paper. In his pop artwork, Warhol used a combination of mechanical and hand-drawn techniques as well as an opaque projector to trace outlines of images in preparation for his paintings. Other sketchbook drawings were exhibited as fine art, such as Studies for a Boy Book, displayed at the Bodley gallery in New York in 1956. Several of his whimsical sketches and drawings from this era were published in magazines and books, such as The Best in Children’s Books series and a little-known vintage cookbook called Wild Raspberries. He also filled sketchbooks with freehand drawings, mostly done in ballpoint pen, of friends and still lifes. In the 1950s, Warhol’s blotted line drawing technique defined his signature style for his commercial work. At Carnegie Institute for Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University, which Warhol graduated from with a degree in pictorial design), Warhol’s offbeat, nontraditional drawing style did not meet all his professors’ academic standards, and he was forced to do extra work in this area over summer break. As a child he took art classes at the Carnegie Museum of Art and later won awards for drawings he had made in high school. Drawing was a constant part of his artistic practice. Although Warhol is best known for his silkscreen prints, he was also an excellent draughtsman.
